Bicycle Boulevards: A great idea for Gainesville to consider

Gainesville has many roadway sections with the potential to serve as bicycle boulevards, easing the passage of bicyclists from one part of the city to the other, without subjecting them to heavier, faster car and truck traffic.

Help Take Gainesville to the Next Level as “Bicycle Friendly Community”

Join members of the public and the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Board (BPAB) on Wed. December 30th, 7pm for a meeting on how to make Gainesville a more bicycle friendly community. This meeting will discuss the application process for getting Gainesville designated a “Bicycle Friendly Community” — a designation which we have had at the Silver level for several years.

The BPAB is exploring what it would take to raise that level for Gainesville. This will require a community-wide effort, but the pay-off will be increased focus on the details that can make our city more livable for everyone.

Meeting Time: 7pm
Location: Alachua County Admin. Bldg (12 SE 1st Street), 2nd Floor, Grace Knight Conference Room

Ideas from Elsewhere: The Bicycle Cellar in Tempe Arizona

Wednesday afternoon, the day before Thanksgiving, I visited the farmer’s market in downtown Gainesville to stock up on veggies to feast on the following day. Every fencepost and street sign already had a bicycle secured to it.

I dared not leave my bike parked out of sight and unlocked for even a minute, since I learned the hard way the behavior of some our our less considerate citizens (would you call them “gainesvillains”?). So I maneuvered through the crowds, bagging and paying with one hand and holding my bicycle as best I could with the other. I would have been satisfied with a minimal bike rack but how about this:

How to make walking (and using the stairs) fun!

Wouldn’t it be great if a little fun could change people’s action for the better? Well guess what: it can! And by the way, there is a terrific proposal to place interactive musical sculptures in downtown Gainesville–designed to highlight the great musical talents that have come from here. I hope you will support that effort.
