Proposed US Bicycle Corridors Plan

July 30th, 2008 was the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) local Pedestrian/Bicycle Coordinators meeting. One of the topics discussed was the proposed US Bicycle Routes corridor plan that has been developed by American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials – AASHTO’s US Bicycle Routes Task Force. The plan is now being considered by various AASHTO committees. The AASHTO Subcommittee on Traffic Engineering endorsed the plan; the Subcommittee on Design is considering it and (according to State Roadway Design Engineer David O’Hagan) plans to vote on it at their next meeting (next year).

The plan is described at http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/nbrn/usbikewaysystem.cfm . Proposed Florida corridors are shown on the map at http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/nbrn/USBRSCorridorMap.pdf . If implementing national bike routes in Florida would be of interest to cyclists, the group needs to hear from you so as to gauge the support.

For more information on the project, visit the website at: http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/nbrn/usbikewaysystem.cfm, and then email Ginny Sullivan (mailto:gsullivan@adventurecycling.org) , Adventure Cycling’s new routes coordinator for more specific details.
