Miami votes to add free “trolley” service downtown

MiamiTrolleyCommuters, sports fans, and others will soon have another option for getting around downtown Miami: a bus trolley that will circulate “through Brickell, downtown and Overtown, east to Biscayne Boulevard, and west to the Culmer Center in the hospital district, culminating at the Miami Marlins’ new ballpark.”

Miami spent $5.6 million to purchase the fleet of 28 trolley buses, and recently agreed to pay a contractor $2 million per year to operate the service. Funding will come predominantly from a half-cent transit surtax, but also Federal stimulus money, and the Florida Department of Transportation.

The city also required that at least 20% of the operator’s employees and support vendors come from the local Miami workforce.
