“Run Bike Walk” Unit in UF Homecoming Parade a Big Success

The Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Board (BPAB) hosted a terrific special unit of nearly 45 bikers, walkers and runners in the annual University of Florida Homecoming Parade, Friday, November 2nd, 2007.  BPAB was joined by the Gainesville Cycling Club (GCC), the UF chapter of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES), and a student infusion of enthusiasm from Critical Mass. The students brought a terrific surprise addition of a band (including drums and trombone) that proved a big hit to the thousands of spectators lining the parade route, along with additional walkers and bike riders that nearly doubled the BPAB contingent in the parade.

The  ASES brought out the solar powered Photon recumbent, which joined 20 or more bikes of all descriptions, including a pedicab, a tandem recumbent, a tandem with trail-a-bike and bike trailer, kid bikes, and even a 3-year-old tricyclist. And don’t forget our favorite Gator on his trail-a-bike!

Much talk followed the parade, as unit participants dreamed up plans for future collaborations — including an even better Homecoming Parade, and other activities to promote running, biking and walking in our community.
