Ideas from Elsewhere: The Bicycle Cellar in Tempe Arizona

Wednesday afternoon, the day before Thanksgiving, I visited the farmer’s market in downtown Gainesville to stock up on veggies to feast on the following day. Every fencepost and street sign already had a bicycle secured to it.

I dared not leave my bike parked out of sight and unlocked for even a minute, since I learned the hard way the behavior of some our our less considerate citizens (would you call them “gainesvillains”?). So I maneuvered through the crowds, bagging and paying with one hand and holding my bicycle as best I could with the other. I would have been satisfied with a minimal bike rack but how about this:

    This video is a perfect example of the types of approaches we need to be thinking about in Gainesville! We need infrastructure and facilities for bikes that are convenient, intelligently designed, and linked up to other forms of transit.
